Just as many of my colleagues I have a deep connection to artists from the past generations. Old masters, cubists, futurists, surrealists, abstract expressionists etc all hold a dear place in my heart and influence my work. I believe that artists like Braque tried to grab our attention by depicting places, people, ideas for us in a way never seen before to force people to pay attention. I love to bring an element of them into todays world and this piece highlights that seamlessly. The Castle of La Roche-Guyon was subject in several works from late painter. It is a unique structure that descends down a hillside starting with a lone cylindrical tower and ending in a sprawling manor. In painting this structure from memory it occurred to me that much like Braque I must too convey and record what is happening in our times. I chose to invert the image and make the structure ascend so that it continues the story, developing it into what it could mean or represent in the future of our society. In a world that is now consumed with its self-loathing we must stop and appreciate the things around us, reflect on the past, and not allow it to consume us as well. A part of a solo exhibition from 2015 this work is framed. It can easily be re-framed to match your personal taste and décor.
