Artwork description:

This is an etching and aquatint printed on wonderful somerset cream paper. It is a very rare artist's proof. (An artist's proof can be defined both as a print taken during progress of the work for the artist's benefit and it can often be a small edition of the work the artist has kept aside as his/her best versions of the print).

The work is inspired by a poem I wrote with the same title:

The muted sky licks the face of the field with
Cold steel and a strong wind blows through the grass
The wind is so tangled up
A furrowed brow is forged on the sky
Outside the circus tent a boy studies
The darkness all around him
Admiring the night in a different way
Happy sounds fall on his ears
Fairground music is carried on the wind
From away in the distance
Beyond the tents

Boys and girls are having fun
On the midnight merry-go-rounds
Their screams and laughter
Occasionally muffled by the wind
Other children in small circles
Play together
Digging their minds into
New and exciting channels

Fireworks shoot into the air
Exploding splattering
Pretty patterns on the sky
The energy of the carnival
Reverberates down through
A century of future nights
Until the noise begins to calm
And sleepiness and the heavy eyes
Of children
Could mistake this all for a dream.
