Artist's description:
This painting is based on the well known fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. The story follows a young mermaid who falls in love with a human, and her quest to become human.
The lure of this painting was to paint an underwater scene, and of course to create my own interpretation of the classic character. I loved working with the cool blues and greens. I wanted to limited the colour pallet. Originally I had imagined all manner of sea creatures filling the scene in vivid colours, but I opted for a simpler approach that emphasised the heroines isolation and longing.
The greatest challenge was painting hair suspended underwater. Painting the mermaids tail was also a challenge in terms of light and texture. I gathered as much reference as I could in order to make my depiction of the character more fully formed and believable. I love painting these kind of character focused pieces.
