Birds, Bees and Butterflies... these have definitely become my favourite subjects, I return to them again and again. Of the 3 though it will always be the humble Bee that inspires me most, it is a most wonderful creature, complex, social, essential to human life and yet faces so many challenges to it's existence.
The Life of the Bee is so called because of the book pages I have collaged as a base directly onto the canvas. These are sealed and prepared with layers of sepia tinted gesso to give the leathery, aged surface that I love to create (I have used the same technique for my little Hummingbird paintings) this allows some of the text to be read but it doesn't over power the painting.
Once this process had finished and the surface dried thoroughly I then painted my white tailed bumble bee using acrylic inks. The wings have been finished with a glaze tinted with an iridescent copper ink that gives just a hint of shimmer. I have initialed the front in sepia ink (I signed it after the photos were taken) and I will sign and date the reverse and attach hanging fixings. I have decided not to frame the painting as it could easily be hung as is but it would look lovely set in a tray frame, I have a white one here that would work perfectly. Message me if you would like this option, I can send you a photo and give you a price.
Every moniter is different and so colours on screen always vary slightly to real life so I have taken a variety of photos in different light conditions, of the photos on here I think on my moniter the photo taken in my studio best matches the sepia of colour of the original.
