Artist's description:

The Hermit : Oils on Linen
(Tarot of the living project)
This is a progressive work I have been working on for some years now. The "Tarot of the Living" depicts friends & personages that encompass the attributes of the Tarot, a pictorial divinatory system. This gloriously laborious process has taken me on many wonderfully significant & strange encounters. I hope to have this oil painted project completed in its entirety at some stage. http://www.neilroberts-arts.com/index.php/other-work/oil-painted-tarot-cards

The subject/model I have chosen for this painting is my good friend Crosby with who I grew up with in South Africa. Crosby runs a successful business in SA that called Sun fire solutions which produces and sells solar cookers and other solar powered green energy products. He travels all over Africa and the 3rd world to townships and places with little or no electricity providing them with alternatives. In the painting Crosby is grasping onto a tree branch which resembles a staff and he is dressed in a earthly robe which he wears on his travels across Africa illuminating with his enterprise of clean solar energy. His face is in side profile and his distant expression conveys deep inward concerns. There is a wooden hut to his right where a radiant light shines brightly from the window opening like light emanating from a lantern. The rock pathway in the leading into a misty forest in the back ground is symbolic of the solitude of the inward search for ultimate truth.
