Artist's description:

This is one of my personal favourites from my black and white street photography collection. It reminds me of photographs from the 1930s/40s, the kind of photography where it was important not to fake or stage the image. Street photography pure and simple, one shot, full frame, nothing taken away and nothing added to it.

I took the photograph in Lugo a city in northern Spain. The sun was falling and it cast a large shadow over the street. I noticed the old lady struggling up the street and I knew it was a dramatic scene for a black and white photo with the light streaming in from the side.

I won my first ever photography competition with this image. I entered it into a local competition in Spain and I was so pleased it won first prize. I won 1,500 euros and the photograph is still hanging in the local mayors office in Carballo, Galicia.
