Castiglione del Lago is the Medieval town on Lake Trasimeno in Umbria, Italy. It's a beautiful place with narrow streets, a ruined castle and gorgeous views across the lake. Its busy streets are always a popular destination and it is rarely empty.
The painting is a watercolour and ink study showing a stylised view of the northern wall with the castle at one end on the promontory and the large domed church at the other. The lake is only 40 minutes from my studio and near Perugia so I often pass it on my travels and recently decided it would make a great series of work.
The style while appearing Naive takes from the painters of the Umbria area and recreates the International Gothic landscape in a modern way. Using simple shapes and patterns as seen in the landscapes of the great artists like Giotto, Martini and Lorenzetti.
