Artist's description:

I always know I have arrived in Amsterdam when I see the Basilica of St Nicolas. It looms. It is solid, slightly creepy perhaps in its stuffy Dutch conservativism of yesteryear. Behind its walls begins the maze of the Red Light District, drawing the visitor inwards, into a web of intoxicating vice and intrigue. As a youngster, a weekly treat was the Van der Valk detective series, 1970s crime drama at its best, and the opening credits always featured this scene. The work is part of a series of works that I embarked on, the Hot Summer of Amsterdam. It is striking, unusual, vivid. As the canvas is 0.4 inches deep it can hang without the need for framing if wished.
