Artist's description:

Here I wanted to convey the essence of what I find beautiful about the tiger. I remember seeing a tiger totally covered and caked in mud walking and what struck me about it was that even though I couldn't see any of its beautiful stripes and orange coat it was still as beautiful and majestic as when its coat was unobscured. It is this that I tried to depict here. In order to convey the sense of the tiger's gait as effectively as possible it turned out, as the painting was progressing, that I had to cut the subject to the bone. I had to get rid of all the details and focus primarily on the essence. I had to think like a sculptor. I used very bold brushstrokes describing the outline as well as the muscle definition of the tiger's body in a fairly minimalist way. It was only when I introduced this simple outline that the whole thing started coming together. The other important aspect of this painting is the landscape, otherwise known as terai, after which the painting is named. In order to make the tiger and the landscape be part of a single seamless whole I naturally approached the landscape in exactly the same way as I did the tiger. This painting is very important to me not least because it came about as a result of lots of thinking and struggle. There were many moments during its creation when I thought I'd have to abandon it. For those reasons the satisfaction that I got from it was doublefold when I managed to bring it successfully to completion. This work for me also indicates the direction in which I want to take my painting in the future.

This painting was executed on a 100% linen 3D canvas, ready for hanging, using high-quality, professional Winsor & Newton artists' oil colour.
