Surfing is a lot like fishing. For long periods nothing happens as you wait for Mother Nature to serve up some excitement. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it, for hours, sometimes days.
That's when "nothing" becomes "something". It assumes a meaning all of its own.
How do you handle the "nothing"? Do you learn to live with it or even embrace it like an old friend? Or do you set your jaw in quiet despair as you struggle to deal with your desperation about your own powerlessness in the face of Mother Nature? Or reach for the cell phone for the thousandth time to block out the reality in front of your eyes?
We are all surfers at heart.
