Sunflowers are very special in my family. It was the first flower I gave the children to grow from seed. Have had sunflowers more or less every year. I first saw a field of sunflowers in 1985 in Hampshire. I remember being totally amazed by it and how at different times of the day the flowers would be in different directions. It had never occured to me, nor had I been told, that sunflowers get their name from that huge celestial being.
My daughter married in 2013 and there were sunflowers everywhere. The bridesmaids, the bride, the groom, the registry office, the reception.
2014 was a particular good year for growing sunflowers, enormous one in my back garden and my elderly neighbour's even made the local news!
For all these reasons I thought it was about time I painted one. This was from my garden, grown with love and painted with a heavy heart because this was as it lay on my bird table, moving on to its next purpose in life, feeding my feathered friends.
