Sunfire 1 has always been my wife's favourite painting. Despite several offers we have always refused to sell it. So - Sunflower 2 from the same sketches, same size and 'the same but different'.
For me, this piece sums up very well the aspects of the sunflower that attract me - colour, architectural structure, aggressive size, vitality! The flower is painted over a strong metallic copper ground which is allowed to grin through in places. Metallic gold in the petals and metallic green in the foliage enhances the decorative effect. Strong, Egon Shiele-like angular black outlines emphasize the structure.
Thin 2cm canvas means the painting hangs close to the wall giving a panel-like effect. Edges of canvas painted white.
