Artist's description:

This is a painting of a summer scene. The sun is shining through the trees down onto a small rowboat on the riverbank. This is also a study I did for a larger painting, which was a commission. The river is in Wisconsin, and runs through a farm.

I was inspired by Impressionistic paintings: the loose brushwork and broken colors caused me to become more painterly. I made small dots of color, reminiscent of Pointillism, to create depth. The colors mix optically, to give it a shimmering effect. Finally, I applied a varnish to enhance and preserve the color.

It is varnished for protection, and framed in a sturdy black metal float frame.

Materials used:

Oil paint, varnish
