The majority of my paintings feature some element of vintage ephemera, be it maps, book pages or, in this case antique music. My studio is a veritable treasure trove of "stuff", of course there's the usual artist's paraphernalia but also my large collection of maps; many, many books; fabric off cuts; antique prints and beautiful found things like seed heads, shells and dried honesty (silver dollar plant I think in the US?)
This, and my love of butterflies was the inspiration behind this painting. the sepia coloured ink I used to describe the honesty seed heads lends itself to the poignancy of the title. My Painted Lady butterfly is a little late to enjoy the honesty flowers this year....
Painted with acrylics inks on an unbleached canvas board the painting is varnished and framed, unglazed, in a lovely wooden frame that is black with little bit of orange that complements the butterfly perfectly.
