This is another of the stoneware 'Spirit Animals' that I create from clay entitled 'Strider'. The name is represented in the pose of the animal form that suggests momentum or moving forward and it is reminiscent of the gracefulness of a greyhound I once owned. The gentle spirit of this creature was inspired by the canines that live in our world, whether it’s the dog, the wolf, coyote, or others.
The firing process is what produces the dramatic black and white results. The piece has a special mixture of some fine liquid clay slip poured over it, placed in a small gas kiln, and fired up to 1200 to 1400 degrees F. It is then withdrawn from the kiln with a pair of long tongs and placed in a metal container that has shredded paper. The container is closed and the piece is allowed to smoke for several minutes, absorbing the carbon to produce the black areas in the clay. This piece measures about 13″ long by 9″ high.
As with any ceramic art, care must be taken in packing for shipment. This is why I choose to have the artwork professionally packed to insure maximum protection during shipment and the shipping cost may be a bit higher. I have not added international shipping yet, but I do plan to offer it. If you would like to order outside of the US, please let me know and I can arrange it.
Thanks for looking!
