This is an oil painting on canvas using a cold wax medium. The painting belongs to a series of images investigating surfaces, textures and partitions. It is essentially an abstract work but it does contain - inevitably - indirect references to objects and things in the real world. Echoes of weathered stone walls, lichen covered rocks and the systematic enclosure and cultivation of land can be interpreted. An aerial reading may suggests ploughed fields, vegetation and a sense of imposed order. The casual striations and vestigial marks record the trace left by drawing instruments and a variety of scoring tools.
I have taken photographs at an oblique angle to give some indication of the raised and indented surfaces across the canvas.
