'Stormy Moonrise', watercolour and gouache, 20 x 10.5" (50 x 27 cm) approx. /
As a child, one of my fond memories was watching distant storms from my bedroom window, marvelling at the way they lit up the clouds with flashes of lightning and how a cloud could produce so much energy whilst being, in the distance, silent. In this work of the imagination I wanted to capture this effect alongside a dramatic moonrise through towering clouds. I wanted to get carried away, driven by those childhood memories! The moonlight lends warm tones to the cloud tops and shines brilliantly around their silver edges, while the storm illuminates both the clouds and the rain with an eerie red glow. Despite the storm, the sea is reflectively flat to echo the silence of this atmospheric scene. This painting is available to purchase, mounted but unframed.
