St Ives is a hugely popular tourist destination in Cornwall, and at the height of summer the harbour is a hive of activity with holiday makers. I took this photograph out of season during the quiet winter, and at a point of high tide when much of the beach is submerged. Sunset had not long taken place and the dusky sky was left with a cool glow sitting above the town. Making the most of the last minutes of natural light, I quickly walked to the end of Smeaton’s Pier where I could see that this selection of boats had lined up perfectly for a portrait image of the town. Each boat draws the eye into the scene which is centred by the orange light on the horizon.
The exposure time of St Ives Boats was a fraction of a second, to smooth the surface of the water and balance it against the texture of the clouds, but not so much that I would lose the detail of the boats. Using metallic gloss paper, the subtle colours and sheen of skylight reflected across the water print exceptionally well.
