Constructed in the mid-16th century, Saint Basil’s Cathedral looms majestically near the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, and has stood watch over countless historical and political events in the country’s history.
It was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible, in honour of victory over the Tatar khanates of Kazan and Astrakahn that were oppressing Russia for 300 years. The building was an inspiration for many artists.
I painted it as a watercolour on paper from a photograph soon after moving to United Kingdom, as a reminder of 4 years spent in Moscow. St-Basil was one of the usual sightseeing images for me, as I was passing through the Red Square almost daily on long walks after studies in my university, and it left an indelible picture in my memory.
