Artist's description:

Random shapes created whilst blindfolded using black Indian ink - and whilst still wet, transferred onto another canvas. Once the ink has dried the empty shapes are filled in with colour. The artistic outcome uses chance as part of the artistic practice of creation and so reducing the artist’s conscious process of decision making.

It was Hans Arp who (whilst studying my art history degree) introduced me to the idea of art based on chance and other artistic conventions. Hans Arp made a series of art collages based on chance where he would stand above a sheet of paper, dropping squares of contrasting coloured paper: gluing the squares wherever they fell onto the page. Arp's chance collages have come to represent Dada's aim to be "anti-art" and the catalyst that ushered in a new era of art based on the unconscious.
