A contemplative pose inside a rigid square form, with each body part conforming to the geometry. The striking features of the figure, constrained to equal proportions of height and width, command immediate attention. Long, flowing brown hair adds an interestingly loose facet to the otherwise rigidly enclosed composition created by the model’s tight position. Cool, bleached highlights and smokey shadows set an ethereal mood and draw the eye to the abstract shapes that create the overall design and contrast the strong geometry of the square.
Although the area surrounding the figure, as well as the highlights on her skin may appear neutral or white, upon closer inspection they are a light blue.
Equal proportions of height and width suggest conformity but she has made an unlikely and fascinating choice to exist with the frame rather than within it. Icy blues and muted bronze help create a moment that is static yet tension-filled. The subject is in the fetal position, symbolizing security and safety; clinging to the stability of structure; in stasis between revealing and concealing.
I call this technique a false-color image, restrained to a particular subset of colors. The method is inspired by oil painting, where the artist chooses a palette and also pays homage to the classic technique of hand-colored photography. Although the colors are conceivable, they deviate from reality. The process shares other aspects with painting, being applied selectively to areas on the image. Painters will often tint shadows and highlights differently in order to give a greater illusion of depth as well as evoking an emotional response. Additionally a warm-toned subject appears to protrude from cool-toned surroundings.
