I love painting crimson skies, sunrises and sunsets being one of my favourite subjects to paint from life. Each poses a different challenge and is fun in its own way.
A couple of months ago, I took on a project of doing a series of sunrises. Pretty much the same view, paint the sunrise in front of my house every day. I did about 25 sunrises and learnt much. It forced me to work quickly and thoughtfully, as the colours in front of me changed faster than I could paint them. It was fun!
Not all days present a perfect crimson sky however, and that really doesn't make it any less gorgeous. So when I had the opportunity to paint a cloudy but very beautiful sky, I took it head on and came up with this. Mine is a very colourful interpretation of very grey skies. I painted with a raincoat on, standing under an umbrella! :)
This landscape is painted in a very loose impressionistic style with bold and vibrant brushwork. The painting is energetic and will draw the viewer in.
I have captured the colours in the painting as accurate as I could, but I always say they are way better in person.
