Original artwork description:

Loneliness, especially in the modern age of social media, is a very real and problematic issue for many. The feeling of not belonging, to feel left out or to be incredibly worried that our presence is not wanted, are only some of the emotions and thoughts that occur when loneliness builds up in our lives.

I have struggled with loneliness for much of my childhood, adolescent and now as a young adult, I still struggle with chronic loneliness. After seeing what effects chronic loneliness had on my grandfather, my own father has begun a start-up called Klaatch, to try and stem the ever growing rates of geriatric loneliness. Through this project he has learned of the profound and adverse physical effects loneliness has on the human body. Chronic loneliness is considered worse for our health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. This has given me the drive to examine my own loneliness more closely to try and find out what boundaries I have built to exclude myself from the community.

This ongoing series comes as a continuation and deepening investigation of my “select” Narrative series. In this chapter, I am attempting to examine the different emotions and scenarios loneliness builds and grow out of in our daily lives.

The art comes ready to hang on a wall with a metal french cleat.

Materials used:

clay, underglaze, acrylic, wood
