This is a very densely painted depiction of a beautiful garden in Menorca that I recently visited. It shows a section of the garden with a stone wall covered by a rambling rose and interspersed with lots of other native climbing plants. The colours were so vibrant in the September golden light - it was fun to paint and build up all the of layers of colour. I wanted to draw all the detail in with the paintbrush so used a much smaller brush than normal and also wanted to create a true sense of the garden but at the same time give it a semi-abstract feel. It is a big canvas (100 x 75 cm) and the paint is applied thickly so it took quite a few sessions to complete.
The painting is designed to be hung unframed and the edges of the canvas are painted a soft grey/blue (as shown in the picture).
