Artist's description:

Oil and acrylic on two canvases, fixed together as one.

This work is made from two canvases on two substrates. The top one has been made semi-rigid with layers of acrylic then oil paint. It has then has holes cut out of it to reveal a glowing gold and red background.

I was interested in breaking up the usual sense of a painting that depicts space. Instead, I wanted it to proffer actual space. As with much of my work, it is an experiment in how one might explore the tensions in painting and the expectations placed upon by its history. The outcome, for me, hints of the experience of gazing past the soot-blackened face of a furnace or coal-fired boiler, into the flames.

Because of its warm glow, I have named it after a much loved song by Sam and Dave.

Materials used:

2 canvases on wooden substrates, oil and acrylic paints
