This painting is an intuitive project that grew over many months. A woman is curled in the foetal position, hiding from the world, protected and safe like a baby, gestating in the mind. There is sadness and loss here too. She is surrounded by power creatures, archetypes that help to protect her: seahorses are the only species in which it is the male who gestates and births the young. The male has a pouch into which the female transfers her eggs which are then fertilized and carried to term. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, the seahorse was a symbol of strength and power. They also believed that seahorses ferried the souls of dead sailors to the underworld. The golden eagle has long been thought of as a bridge between the human world and the gods, since it can fly higher than other birds. It also brings the message of renewed life.
