This portrait is done on a panel that I made by coating it with a special mixture of Alaskan glacier silt and clear gesso. The neutral grey background you see in this portrait is the natural silt in all its toothy glory. When doing a portrait in charcoal, having a support that accepts my strokes is very important. I especially loved how the silt helped convey the soft light that fell across the models face. Little details like this make all the difference in the world to an artist. :)
