Artist's description:

This painting is inspired by the fairytale of Snow White and Red Rose. Notably penned by the Brothers Grimm, this tale differs greatly from the more widely known fairytale Snow White. In this tale Snow White and Red Rose are sisters, who live in a little cottage in the woods. The sisters befriend a bear (who is really a handsome prince of course), and together they best a troublesome (and rather obnoxious) Dwarf.

It struck me how this tale challenged the common interpretation of the character of Snow White - she is in fact the fair haired sister who wears a white rose in her hair. There are similarities, or rather commonalities in the two tales - the presence of the dwarf for example, but the tale itself is vastly different.

I wanted to focus on the contrast between the the two sisters - the red roses/the white roses, dark hair/fair hair etc. I tried to push the contrast between the colours, the richness of the red petals/the paleness of white petals. I tried to keep the details clean and tight on the faces, and then let the hair be loose and flow across the painting. I wanted to paint a striking interpretation of this lesser known, but fantastic, fairytale.
