I love the NY music scene but my favorite thing to do is go to a packed club with my earplugs in so I can take in all the chaos, light, movement and energy while simultaneously 'muting' the sound so I can feel everything from a more voyeuristic perspective. I recently painted this for my friend Valerie Orth, who did a fantastic cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit. I thought I could simulate my experience by painting it in muted shades of gold, dark forest green and rust. I think the palette, combined with the movement of the figures, perfectly captures the dark grunge of a small club, sweaty and sexy.
