My favourite film of all time is The Third Man.
In response to a themed exhibition entitled “Undercover”, I was inspired to paint two versions based on Carol Reed’s classic film noir. It was a labour of love, as I sifted through various stills, choosing three scenes to composite next to one another. The images were blown up, tracings were taken and subsequently drawn so that the different scenes became one piece - depicting Lime’s discovery, to his flight through war-torn Vienna and into the sewers.
Shades of Lime v.2 is painted using black acrylic on green art paper with the title above, the date, version and signature below, as if it were a film stock negative. Shades 2 is darker and more gothic than Shades 1 and the image is reversed. In November 2006 Art Below displayed it in a large poster format as part of an exhibition at Knightsbridge underground station.
