Artist's description:

Severe Deppressive Episode looks at mental illness. It is a triptych of three individual 9.5" x 12" canvases. Each canvas depicts part of a depressive episode.

The first is entitled "The Actor." The face appears manic, it's eye's wide, it's grin huge. It shows how people try to hide their illness. The teeth are clenched so tight there is no gap between top and bottom. The sufferer does not want to speak or expose their true selves, they hide behind their smile. The face is square surrounded by soft cursive white. It is an illusion of being in control. The brush strokes strong and contrived.

The second canvas is entitled "The Sedated." This canvas depicts how people subdue their illness through either prescribed or other drugs ie alcohol. The face has become round and hazy the eyes are now deep, dark and leaking, unseeing, uncaring. The brush strokes soft. The sufferer has become introspective. Hiding from their own condition. The smile remains but although the teeth still remain clenched however gaps are appearing.

The third in entitled the monster. This is the point where no pretence or sedation can stop the illness. It is crazed, eyes wild. Uncaring, all pretence is gone. The mouth gapes toothless in a howl of despair.
