Starting with a direct, watercolour response to the landscape I produce small, quick paintings capturing the rapid change in the sky as the sun rises. My practice is to take a number of photos of the subject while working – I use these as alternative or additional reference when I return to the studio. In the studio, I manipulate the watercolours and photographic images digitally, combining them to produce a new series of images.
This process revisits the landscape but with two different, distinct memories. The tools I use to record a scene come not only with their own strengths and weaknesses, but each with the ability to uniquely alter the way we see the world.
