Artist's description:

This piece was created as part of a dream sequence in my graphic novel, The Boy with Nails for Eyes. The image was created in the style of the art nouveau figure Alphonse Mucha.

The original image was drawn onto Bristol board in pencil, before being inked with Indian ink and a fine brush for the figures and curved lines, and using Rapidograph pens for the straight lines. The original pencil was erased and the image toned using a combination of pencil, inkwash and chalk.

The result was scanned into Photoshop, where colours were added. Rather than use a simple colour overlay process, I combined a variety of layering techniques and masks to give the image further complexity and depth. I drew inspiration from Mucha's approach to colour - exquisitely balanced, bold despite being muted - but also took advantage of the effects offered by digital techniques.
