Artist's description:

Originally, the constellation also included the Libra (which was then the claws of the Scorpion).

The Scorpion is the object of several legends according to Greek mythology: it would be the Scorpion of fire sent by Artemis to kill the hunter Orion. Thus it is opposed to the constellation Orion, rising in summer when Orion sets. Other versions suggest that Apollo sent the Scorpion of fire out of jealousy towards the attention that Orion carried to Artemis. It also appears during the quest for Perseus.
