Artist's description:

One of the best day walks I've done was up Cerro Tronador on the Argentinian / Chilean border.

The day started surreally with dense fog banks covering everything on the drive from Bariloche. As we neared the mountain the road turned into 25 miles of winding rocky track, I had fears for the hire car. By the time we reached the start of the walking trail the sun had come out and was shining brightly and to top it off we found a hut which served fantastic coffee and had amazing apple pie!

The walk took us along a stream, through a forrest and up above the tree line to a desolate martian like landscape. Tronador is Spanish for thunderer. Throughout the day we could hear the thunder as glacial ice fell hundreds of metres to the valley floor below.

At the end of the walk I was greeted by the view in this image. The glacier looked like a handful of rough blue diamonds had been scattered over it's surface, curving with the slope and then frozen in time - mesmerising.
