Artist's description:

I'm so pleased with the way this portrait of a San Woman turned out. It was an image I woke up with and when you try to transfer that to paper it doesn't always work. I've thrown some of the picture out of focus like a camera does with a macro shot. I love this effect and it draws you to the most important part of the face, the eyes, the window to the soul. In my mind I saw a vivid red stripe across her face. Again, this highlights her eyes and what's behind them.
The fine red pen was difficult to work with as it took so long to dry and not smudge. I think the effect was worth it.
I believe that we live in a very manufactured way and the San show us how we were supposed to live. In harmony with nature and all men and woman are equal. I maybe accused of being over sentimental when it comes to the San people but this is the way I feel. This is what inspires me to draw them many times. Their deep humanity, humour and humility. I love this portrait and can only hope you do too
