Artist's description:

I painted this on a lovely sunny day in Venice - I got sunburnt - standing on the opposite side of the Grand Canal. There's a short length of path by the canal, reached down one of those dark passageways so characteristic of Venice - you start off down an unpromising path and after 20 yards you see the glitter ahead, framed under an arch, then emerge to a glorious jewel-like view. From this spot San Salute shows beautifully and catches the light in all its voluptuousness. I love trying to fix the shape on paper, and understand how my eyes and brain know what shape things really are.
Painted entirely on the spot, Unison pastels on Canson Mi-Teintes paper.
