Artist's description:

This is an original acrylic painting of saiga antelopes done by me. The Saiga appeals to me because it looks like an imaginary creature from a science fiction or fantasy story. It is one of the few animals with hooves that has an almost trunk like nose. The reason why the nose is shaped like this is for removing dust that gets stirred up from the ground where they live. It also warms up cold air in the winter before it gets into the lungs. The Saiga lives in Mongolia, Kalmykia and Kazakhstan . The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has classified this animal as critically endangered. Mostly because of poaching and habitat loss. The horns of the saiga are used in traditional Chinese medicines, causing males to be targeted by poachers. This has caused a huge problem for the saiga’s struggling population. There are other problems as well, there was a population of 26,000 saiga in Kazakhstan but in 2010 12000 of them were mysteriously found dead. This was most possibly from pasteurellosis, a disease that is infectious and fatal. Though it still remains uncertain what killed them. The only places to have saiga in captivity today is the Moscow zoo and Askania Nova Nature Reserve
