All my paintings are made intuitively and spontaneously. The various components of the paintings are sourced mainly from imagination. I don't own a sketchbook or undertake preliminary studies. I start with a blank canvas and an inspired idea. The idea might have been prompted by a thought or something observed, for example, an artwork, pattern, or painting technique. I focus on one task at a time and try not to think about how everything is going to come together in the end. Slowly but surely a picture emerges as different components come together and find their rightful place in the painting. I never know how a painting is going to turn out until it nears the final stages. I know the work is finished when the composition, colours, and values reach a certain dynamic balance that feels complete.
