This painting came about through watching my daughter's primary school sports day in Edinburgh - it was a gloriously sunny day with crystal clear views and the figures of the running children (in their house colour T-shirts) and the watching spectators set against the background of green fields and mature trees stuck in my mind as a striking image. While making the painting I was thinking about the energy and optimism of the children as they run forward into their lives, in which there will no doubt be darkness as well as light, and the colours I chose reflect this idea of the vibrancy and energy of life combined with melancholy and darker realities.
This is an expressively painted work combining some abstract passages with more figurative detail. I worked with pools of acrylic paint for the underlayers and then water-based oil paint on the upper layers which adds interesting texture and sheen to the final surface.
It is painted on MDF board, mounted on wooden supporting timbers, so is ready to hang (or could be framed, if preferred).
NB The interior view is intended to give a rough idea of size only - it may not be exactly to scale.
