Roseberry Topping is a fantastic landmark with distinctive views accross North Yorkshire, Cleveland and Captain Cook's Monument. A walk up to the top of the summit is always a challenge but definitely rewarding. To paint this view I walked around the outskirts of Newton Wood through thick ferns, in mid-October.
The wind was very strong and I had a job just keeping the easel upright to paint. In fact my colour wheel blew away though I was able to retrieve it from a farmers barbed wire fence. This is a location I am sure I will return to as the landscape and hill has such a distinctive shape to paint. My treatment of the paint is quite thickly applied in some places as I wanted to create the 'stocky' appearance of Roseberry Topping.
