Artist's description:

A robin red-breast on a branch in winter. The robin is a bird which always popped up in our garden in Devon and, more often than not, a visit would be followed by some good news! From a photograph.

An initial gesture drawing in charcoal and textures through water-miscible oil applied with a roller/brayer started things off. I was attempting to show the nature of the winter light coming through the trees in abstract form. The image developed through layering pastel, dark to light, capturing the gorgeous colours of the robin.

Materials used:

Soft pastel, charcoal and water-miscible oil paint
