Artist's description:

I portrayed abstract and illustrative elements into this African painting. I worked on a much bigger scale size of canvas because I wanted to incorporate more flavors of contrasting colors. I wanted to enhance the color paints using a different approach and technique. My aim was to create a more modern piece of art. I used a very interesting composition onto the page to suit the artwork. I applied the colors I required onto my palette like yellow, scarlet red and whites to create the sky effect. I incorporated a sunset theme to the artwork and brushed down different tones of pale pink, slight reds and a stroke of yellow into the sky line making the colors efficient and smooth as possible. On to the mountains I painted black all the way till the other end of the canvas making it like a silhouette. On top of the silhouette I combined slight greens with orange tones so the mountains stood out making it interesting in technique. Next I used a bigger paint brush to brush down the blue onto the river and made it a colorful blue where I applied areas of light blue to make the colors effective. Once the paint dried I outlined the foreground subject where I painted figurative people fishing in their canoes. I kept the same approach like the mountains where I painted the figures black and applied contrasting colors on top like scarlet reds, bright greens and orange light falling from the sunset. On the canoe I applied more traditional browns and incorporated textured finishes of paint onto the canvas. This gave a dry touch to the artwork which looked visually interesting. I painted the fishing mesh very neatly and progressed onto the left hand side of the page painting the remaining figurative elements. The colors were touched up with a bright tone and finish.
Lastly I painted dark shades of blue onto different areas of the page and created wave effects to the river. I also applied orange onto some parts of the waves so it flowed together with the sunset theme.
At the end I was fascinated by the color contrast because it looked very vibrant from a distance.
