Original artwork description:

I was inspired/thrusted into brooding action after the announcement that the UK government would be reintroducing neonicotinoid pesticides earlier this year.

For those of you who aren't familiar with neonics, they are a form of systemic pesticide which has been found to cause CCD in bee hives (colony collapse disorder) as well as obliterating most other pollinators that come into contact with it. They were banned for this very reason and should have stayed that way.

Why the birds you ask? After reading 'A buzz in the meadow' by Dave Goulson (cracking read btw) I was introduced to the fact that the grains of the crops themselves are covered in the pesticide. It is only too easy and fatal for small birds to hoover up the spilt grain, with one seed containing enough pesticide to kill a songbird.

The reintroduction has be overturned yet again, but keep a weather eye as there's a lot of money floating around.

Oil and acrylic on cradled board, ready to frame!
