This painting is intended to convey a feeling of comfort and peace. Chance is a (prize-winning, I think), pedigree show dog but I'm not convinced he really cares about that -the settee is more his thing, I think. This painting is intentionally dark and lacking in contrast, so that the dog and the settee blend and allow your eyes to see other forms within the shapes that it contains (but does colour-contrast sharply with the burst of Ultramarine Blue that comprises the cushion) -I found his fur quite mesmerising whilst I was painting this. This painting has had a coat of C Roberson Exhibition varnish to offer protection until it is old enough to varnish (if desired), with a conventional finishing varnish (oil paintings need up to a year to cure properly & to use finishing varnish too early can make it irremovable, making future cleaning impossible without damage to the paint film).
