Artist's description:

Original ballpoint pen drawing of a Red Cross dog on an original personal letter on Red Cross headed paper dated 1969. An interesting contemporary artwork that would make the ideal gift for dog lovers!

I love to use unusual backgrounds in my work, particular vintage documents such as maps, postcards, tickets, share certificates, etc. I seek to find a connection between this and the subject matter - be that historical, geographical or simply colour based - to create artwork that has many layers of interest that compliment each other. For this piece I wanted to explore the largely unknown role dogs have played in war support. Particularly during the first world war where the Red Cross used specially trained dogs to help stricken soldiers in the battlefields. With huge amounts of hard work, dogs could be trained to ignore battlefield conditions, dead bodies and even to distinguish British uniforms from the enemy. The dogs were sent out under the cover of darkness carrying medical supplies and water. If soldiers were unconscious or unable to move the dogs would return to lead stretcher parties back to the injured. You can find out more about these amazing 'dogs of war' here:

The original artwork is float mounted in a simple black box frame and signed on the front. It's ready to hang and care notes are also included to help you make the most of your purchase. See additional photos for detail.
The 'sister' piece of artwork made using the envelop that this letter was sent in can be view here:
