Rebecca in Black is inspired by Matisse's Blue Nudes. The model's pose was fantastic. I quickly cut paper whilst the model was posing, using a scalpel to 'draw' the pose. The cut out figure shows not only form and line, but also suggests volume and depth, rather like a two dimensional sculpture.
At first glance this collage may look like a painting, but the close-up shot shows some subtleties of the cut paper technique I use: there are rough edges where I've cut the paper with a scalpel, there are variations in colour where I've painted the paper before cutting it, and you can see that the figure sits slightly away from the white backing paper....all the qualities I love about collage!
The silvery black paper is highly textured where I have layered paint before cutting out the figure. Brush marks are visible and the painted surface has a sheen.
The artwork comes in a protective plastic sleeve.
Each artwork is unique and hand made. I make the same designs in a maximum of 5 different colours. Once these 5 pieces have sold, the edition is over and no more artworks are produced from that design. I never make two of the same design in the same colour.
