Artist's description:

What a beautiful and brightly colored pair of purple Phalaenopsis orchids! These twins were wee flowers, each hardly more than an inch across. I chose to light them from high and behind, knowing that the overlap of the petals would show as strong shadows, and that the lighting against the black background would make the colors pop.

There was a technical problem, however. Because the flowers were so small, I had to bring my camera in quite close to photograph them. Doing so limits the amount of flower that can be in focus at any one time. It’s called the Depth of Field, DOF – the distance between the closest part of the flower that can be in focus and that of the furthest part in focus at one time. There was no way, with the camera this close to these tiny blossoms that I could get them entirely in focus. Something was going to be blurry. So I used a photographer’s trick called ‘focus stacking’ to make it work. I shot fifteen different photographs, the first focused on the part of the flower closest to the camera, and each of the others focused just a bit further away. It had to be done carefully so that no part of the flower was left out of focus in this set, and so that there were no exposures which were blurry because of camera shake. At the end, I used Photoshop to combine them into this one magnificent image.

This image comes as a limited edition of 25 - 24x36 archival prints on artist's canvas. Thesse prints on canvas are so beautiful that people often confuse them with paintings.
