“You can't even touch a woman with a flower”, my grandmother taught me as a child. Ancient and wise words that served to educate and have respect towards the female sex. Words that should be taught in schools today, given the increasing cases of violence against women even by very young boys. And in the group, in the pack, the male often demonstrates all his weakness and cowardice. Like the beasts that 80 years ago raped and tortured Norma Cossetto for two consecutive nights, an Istrian student guilty only of not wanting to deny her Italian identity, who was then thrown alive into a foiba. A page torn from school books for too many decades to hide the infamy committed by Tito's communist partisans, but which fortunately has been remembered for years in many Italian towns that have named streets, squares and gardens after Norma.
It is in these places that we place a red rose in memory of her: so as not to forget the violence that women suffer every day. Violence that cannot be justified by any motivation, because there are no wars, jealousies or religions that can cover the evil of a brutal act that marks the victim and her family forever.
