I was inspired to paint this upon becoming Facebook friends with a very talented and deep-thinking young woman with difficult life circumstances. I was impressed by her inner and outer beauty, her poetry and her views on life's challenges. Also, at that time I was under impression of Amy Winehouse tragic fate (one might notice some similarities in the young woman's facial features with Amy's -- it wasn't intended).
The themes of a sensitive, artistic soul facing harsh realities of material world, of an exhausting internal struggle between individual and the commercialized uniformity and pressure to fit into the grid, about a choice whether to give into the mass culture standards or to dare to stand out and remain different, had always resonated with me. So, this painting is about all this...
The image's build on a stark contrast between gentle features, delicate hues and fine, fluid lines of the young woman and of the flowers she's carrying, and the imposing heaviness, sameness and rigidity of monochromatic square cells on a background. Despite this dramatic conflict, the mood of this artwork is tranquil and positive. The woman is calm and self-assured: she keeps on bringing warmth of poetry of color into the cold black n' white world of rules and regulations,.. she's not giving up on life despite the adverse circumstances...
